BEDM - Day 21 "Collaboration"

Today I am collaborating with Kezzie over at Kezzie AG. She suggested that we ask each other questions. My idea, from Mr B, was that we did some sort of Skype-y video thingy of her teaching me Chopsticks! Not enough time for us to figure it out for today; but the future? Hey, you never know!
I called my questions to her " KezzieQuest". Any questions, from anybody, directed to me are called "Interrogation"!
So let the interrogation begin...

1.  What was the finest or your favourite hat you ever made and why?
I rather liked one I made for a ladies' second wedding. She was a 'mature lady' and my friend was doing her suit, in scarlet silk with a sort of lime green piping. It sorta sounds garish, but it was very smart. The hat she wanted was, so I was told, like the one that Jamie Curtis wore in "A Fish Called Wanda", which I hadn't seen.

We didn't have access in those days like we all take for granted nowadays, so I sussed she meant a Jackie O-type pillbox with a big bow on the back.
All in the red silk and piped in green. Even the big, puffy bow. I think it looked fab. Sadly, no photo but I know she also wore it to Glorious Goodwood, so she must've liked it too!

2. Who was your favourite teacher or lecturer through life and what difference did they make or how did they inspire you?
This was tough. I narrowed it down to 3. In reverse order, Gordon, who I worked with at Festival Ballet. Generous to many of us with his knowledge and spirit. He went on to work lecturing costume in Hong Kong and it broke my heart to find out that he had been stabbed to death in his own flat with his cutting out scissors. Second, Mr Hathaway from Junior School. Just brilliant in all respects. Our big Summer Term project with him was building a Saxon Hut and a Charcoal Burners Hut in a corner of the school playing fields.
But in first place, the wonderful Mr Little. Also in Junior School, the year before Mr Hathaway and the designer of LOBNIC - Little's Own Binary Numbers Instant Calculator, or words to that effect. He also helped teach us French by playing Bingo in French...'Maison!'. Well, we were only about 9 years old at the time!

3. If you could design a new crisp flavour, what would yours be?
I'm wondering about cheese and pineapple?
When I was younger, before the choice there is now, someone taught me about putting Worcestershire Sauce into a bag of ready salted and giving it a good shake.

4. What was your most embarrassing work experience ever?
Calling Chantal, Princess von Ernst of Hanover 'Mrs Hanover' when filling in an order form for her at Catherine's!
"Mrs Hanover" probably wearing something not from Chelsea Design Co
I only found out when I came to do the banking and logged her cheque in for items she had bought  from the women's wear boutique. ( I had been working in the children's shop.) In my defence, the form was one of those pre-printed ones with Mr/Mrs/Miss on, so at least I didn't put Mr! For another good boobie, again at Catherine's, read this!

5.  What led you to follow the career you followed?
I went to design college not knowing what I wanted to do. I had tried really hard to get an apprenticeship as a farrier, whilst still at school, with no joy. I did the Foundation Course and didn't want to do a degree so it was a toss up to either do Theatre Design & TV Crafts or Product Design, purely on the basis of wanting to be able to use the amazing workshops that were available. I plumped for theatre because I could sew. One of my tutors was Head of Millinery at The Royal Opera house; we hit it off and I had a flair for hat making.
I pushed myself out there in what was due to be my last year at college, and was offered a job with Freddie Fox, with college agreeing to me doing one day a week with FF in my final term and then go into a full time job.
Then I got glandular fever big time. My mum thought I had luekemia I was that unwell. So everything went a bit tits up! When I finally finished my course and moved to London I was lucky enough to get work as Wardrobe Mistress for visiting companies to Sadler's Wells, for Dance Umbrella. The theatre was also home for Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet, (aka BRB now), and eventually moved permanently to the Making Wardrobe, as opposed to Touring Wardrobe, for them.
Was head-hunted by Gordie at LFB.

Me & Gordie were working hard in Granada
Then I moved to work with a friends' mother, who made bridal wear in Chelsea which was hellish and then went to Catherine's.
Fast forward to us living in Southsea, where I set up as freelance maker and then eventually re-training in Business Administration and then working as a technical librarian for an engineering company that carried out work for British Aerospace amongst others.
I loved it.
Sadly, my clinical depression started and I was ultimately made redundant, which didn't help.
I now am termed 'a homemaker' or what I call Mr B's PA!!

6.  If you were offered some sort of blog opportunity, what would your ideal one be?
No idea.
Maybe something for large ladies or something for mental health or something for large ladies with mental health issues!

7. Where was your most exciting holiday ever?
I'm not well-travelled at all, but I did go on tour with Mr B to Switzerland. We stayed at the amazing Lausanne Palace Hotel and also spent time in the most amazing theatre in Basel.
Where we ate breakfast at the Lausanne Palace, with a view of Lake Geneva
I'm tempted to say I don't do 'exciting' but I am doing something exciting at the end of June.
If I can get out of the house, which nearly tripping myself up just going to the bakers this lunchtime, I wonder if I'll manage it! It's just the stress I think that makes me lose balance; I must look drunk if you are walking behind me!

8. What is your most favourite item in your wardrobe?
Depends what for. Generally trousers and if at home all day, then comfy.
Can't think of one extra special item though.
Will have a think on that one!

9.  Share your most shocking deed as a child (if you dare!??!!)

When I was away at school, aged 12, a whole load of us went into the field next to the tennis courts and 'fought' with the local boys.

We got sent to bed early, (I mean about 6 o'clock early), with no supper, just bread and water. I can't remember her exact words, but Mardi, the headmistress, was really, really not pleased with me!

10. What are the things you miss most about being a child.
Brent Cottage, where I grew up. It was idyllic. And a lack of fear. I was always wary, but it's the fact you don't take in the huge enormity of stuff when you're a kid, do you?

11. Tell me your favourite word and why?
Tabby. Yes, I know, my cats' name. But we would, and still do, sing what we call The Tabby Cat Song aka the SATC theme tune with Tab Tab Tab as the words. Or The Big Bang Theory with Tab, Tab Tab, it all started with a tabby cat! CAT!! Try it, it's catchy!

Phew! If you're still reading, I take my hat off to you! (ha ha).
Thank you, Kezzie, it's been a blast!
Now, about Chopsticks...........

BEDM - Day 6 "Share The Blog Love"

I have a reading list with my favourites in, in the sidebar on the right.
I'd say take your pick. They're all good!

Or, for something a bit different, check out the same post a year ago, here, for the original bloggers that got me started. Narrowboating bloggers have a lot to answer for!

But if you only ever read one more post, make it this one, "Legs Akimbo LIL - the PAP test Queen...."   from MOB (menopausal old bag). She hasn't blogged for years but all her posts are brilliantly written, funny, (apart from the one about the passing of her kitty), and in the case of this one, a little bit 'vulgar'.
Be warned!

But do read!

All The Nice Girls Love A

Rosy, from Sewingadicta has been, in conjunction with other bloggers, hosting "Share in Style" this summer.
I am very behind, I know!

But fresh from the joys of "PlaidUrDay" organised by seƱora Allnut I did rather fancy joining in again with this too.

These bloggers are the ladies who I never felt quite brave enough to follow or converse with. Sassy, amazingly dressed and all with that indefinable quality - style.

Maybe I'm just getting braver!

So, my 'sailor' style comes and goes over many years. I have an original pair of sailor pants from when I was a student and slim enough to fit 'em. I made a slightly bigger pair in London. Bright red cotton seersucker with brass buttons for the fold-up frontage.
But the picture I choose is from when my mum still lived on the South Coast and I'd taken Mr B down for a visit.

My stripey 'deckchair' dress, already old when gifted to me from a mate when we were at college together, (my, it must've been big on me then!!), and still comes out every summer. Patched with zigzag machine-stitching where it ripped under the arm, but, other than that, still going strong. And worn with the bestest of 'sailor' deck shoes, which, if memory serves me well, (and believe me, that seems to be getting less and less well!), were bought from Red or Dead when still running as a stall at Camden. Those I think have ultimately hit the refuse bin! (But not before I removed the laces!!).

So....let's party!

A little starter, or 'dish of the day', Crayfish and avocado salad.
A Nottingham special
To take care of the drinks-side of the party, may I offer up this...a rum-based cocktail.

Old Cuban1.5 oz. Jamaican rum
1 oz. 1:1 simple syrup
¾ oz. lime juice
6 mint leaves
2 dashes Angostura bitters
2 oz. chilled champagne or dry sparkling wine

Shake all ingredients—save for the champagne—with ice in a cocktail shaker.
Double-strain into a chilled cocktail glass and top with two ounces of champagne.
Garnish with a small mint sprig.

Eve: Here ya go, one champagne cocktail.
Adam: Oh, thank you.
Eve: I thought only hookers drank those things?
Adam: Well, I know mom sure likes 'em.

(check out the mannequin legs 'table')

The band, as it is now, a mix of old and new members, (sons of an original member), can be booked for your party or function here.

Facebook Has A Lot To Answer For

First off I don't really 'do' Facebook.
But when I spied Vixs' link to 'PlaidUrDay', hosted by Senora Allnut.  Well, I  just had to gate crash, didn't I?
So, let me see...if you like something on Facebook, you give it a big thumbs up.

If we're going to a party, well, you need music. A very old copy of PlaidUrDay, PlaidUrDay, PlaidUrDay Night's All right (for fighting dancing), still with its' Oxfam price tag!

Forgive the twist on the lyrics, Elton &Bernie!

image from Google
I also thought I'd bring some food...Madras Curry of course!

But Mr B looked at me 'quizzically'...umm, Madras check! Doh!

I've spent the day waddling around in my Betty Boop/Eeyore PJs that Mr B bought me back from Target(USA).
But I had already scanned my new, yet to be worn, shirt from New Look, which, with the autumnal weather, I think will be getting a lot of wear.

Happy PlaidUrDay!

You Know The Saying...

...'I saw this and thought of you.'

Umm, guess who I thought of when taking this hasty snap whilst stationary at the bus stop?

"Across the world Vix transforms the way people connect."

"Vix presents at Resource Village Operations conference."

"Stagecoach selects VIX as technology partner."

"Bus and Coach Buyer, January 2013. Not only is Vix on the Cover of Bus and Coach Buyer's January edition it also features a 3 page article. "

I know she's been busy with Kinky Melon, but boy, this girl gets around!

Vix Technology is an Aussie-based company that, in this case, was probably working on the Real Time Passenger Information board.

Our Vix, she's a star!

Overtheshoulderboulderholders

aka bras!
Me 'n' Caroline, from Putting Your Life In Order went on a little road trip on Monday.
A la Thelma and Louise as Mr B said.

With the wind in our hair air-con on in her husbands' hybrid car, we drove off to Desborough, where there is a factory outlet for wacoal-eveden whose ranges include Fantasie, Freya and Elomi.

Think lingerie (and swimwear), think glamour.
umm, the shop
Do not be alarmed! Inside you are greeted by these two lovely ladies and a collection of stock that will take your breath away.

Marie and Louise
Marie got the short straw, me, to look after and she was fabulous, not only managing to get me into a 38 size bra(!), but explaining her choices with regard to the way each bra was constructed.

Fantasie make several styles of bra with a sort of crescent shaped piece on the outer side of the cup, so the lower part of the cup is made of 3 sections as opposed to 2, which makes it much better support for a larger cup size.
Even if you aren't buying a bra from them, check out their shape fitting guide here.
Lots of top tips if you are looking to buy a new bra.
the offices
I did end up going up a size, (though still a smaller back size than I thought...but bigger cups), in as much as I wouldn't have Marie at home to help me get dressed in the morning(!) and probably would've struggled to do it up easily. I got 'Susanna' in teal and 'Elodie' in purple.

But I know what I have chosen fits properly and gives me a better outline underclothing. Again, another top tip, try your clothes on over a bra in the changing room; you'll be amazed at the difference a good fitting bra gives.

Thank you gurrlfriend, for taking me out on such a fun trip!

#BEDM "Day in the Life - take a photo every hour on the hour" 5pm

Umm, it's 5pm and I've just managed to take my first photo!
the 5pm photo
It's been a lovely day.

Went into town to meet a new blogger mate, Caroline, of  'Putting Your Life In Order'.
We met for lunch and a natter at Most Marvellous and it was one the most pleasant ways to while away some time.
Cannot wait to do it again!
(and maybe take some photos if we're not too busy gabbing and eating!)

Don't Go Breaking My Heart

I've hankered after a pair of Terry de Havilland shoes since forever!

Having bitten the bullet, egged on by Pearls' post, I plumped for 'Jay', in the sale on the TdeH website and over 200 quid cheaper than Sarenza!!

(Start small I thought and then work up to the even more beautiful expensive 'Margaux').

Sadly, I don't think the cut of his jib suits my foot. Great round the heel-end and with lacing good over my foot. But where have my toes gone???

I know I'm not actually going to be wearing that much, I mean, look at that heel height, but I still want them to fit and not make me look as though the front end of my foot is deformed!

So, not this time, but, maybe, if I get to actually try some on before I buy, I may yet find the perfect pair.

Pretty blue nail varnish is Barry M Gelly Hi-Shine in Blueberry. My first Barry M nail varnish.
(Oh yes, I really know how to push the boat out!).
Thanks to Victoria extolling the virtues of their Gelly Hi-Shine Lips, I did a little recce on the Boots website and, when in the store, plumped for the 3 for 2 offer, and bought the lippie in Capella and the Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer in Cool Medium 2.

After trying out the Boots No7 Stay Perfect Superlight Foundation on her recommendation too and being totally impressed I think Florence & Mary is becoming my go-to beauty bible!!

#BEDM "5 Fave Posts"

This is a hard one (5) to choose; I don't normally blog every day but when something I want a record of happens. So...

Number 1

A little piece about backstage at the O2 Arena. You follow Pennyblossoms? That makes you a VIP in my eyes!

Number 2

Pink Pan(t)s
If you know the TV show 'Smack The Pony' I'm sure you know where I'm coming from. This post may be 3-4 years old, but just thinking about it still makes me laugh.
Would you like a leeetle deserrrt?

Number 3

A post(card) from Plymouth.
Photos of the sea, from one of our twice-yearly trips to Devon. Mr B goes on tour there and me and the 2 cats go for a holiday. We usually rent a basement flat on West Hoe and have been going there for years. We first took the cats when Rene was about 3 months old; she will be 15 years old this year.

Number 4

Getting rescued by a hunky copper! Say no more, honest Guv!
http://penny-blossoms.blogspot.com/2012/09/my-knight-in-armour-in-his-dashing.html

I have suffered from Clinical Depression for years and have popped in posts about how/what has affected me during the 5 years of this blog.
I like to see and read how I have improved and the total nutcase-ness of this situation proved how well I have progressed.

Number 5A

Danielle, Mrs Bossa, Char, Helen, Alex
The Northwest Bloggers Meet-Up.

Alex made me an honorary member and I had a fabulous day meeting unknown people!!!

That is the amazing-est thing about blogging...I have met such fab people who (I hope) I can call 'friends', that I keep in touch with and care about deeply.
Lucky me!
I mean, wouldn't you want to spend a day in the company of these lovely ladies?

To think I may never have met Pearl doesn't bear thinking about!
But I'm gonna be cheeky here and add another post which ties with 5A and call it 5B...

Number 5B

One of my meet-ups with the wonderful Vix.

Yep! Blogs and Bloggers are fabulous!

#BEDM ‘What is your blog all about?’

"You never know what you'll find on Pennyblossoms",
so says Mr B, my partner of 28 years on Sunday.
  (Or is that 'partner-in-crime'?)
Superstar Vlogger, Louise, of Sprinkle of Glitter said my blog is '... mostly about homes and interiors and what not, I enjoy blogs like that muchly..'

Sadly, Blogger seems to be playing silly b*ggers and I can't put in links or centre my typing, so I am giving up! Not how I envisaged my first #BEDM post to be!! Fingers crossed it'll be all up and running properly tomorrow.

Summer (Colour) Lovin'

This is the best I can do to say thank you to you fellow bloggy friends who wished me well with my impending tooth nightmare!

Can't quite do the bunch of flowers, so a selection of pretty flower bulbs that need to be planted up!

Working on from the last post of having buying things you might need - Mr B came home with this present for me (us?...but you know who'll be using it!) from 'techy support', Patch.
(See him here, with the 1948 Olympic Torch)

A giant 'pencil sharpener' to peel and curl your root veggies.

Now, I really like raw carrot, never eat enough of it and always tend to grate it.
(Unless they're ones I've grown then I just eat them straight out of the ground!).
So I rather like the idea of making those nice little curls that you find in arty foody pictures; a little bit more substance than grated bits.

A rather scary-looking me planting bulbs on Christmas Day 2013. As always, a bit late planting, but I'd picked these packets up really cheap in Homebase; bluebells, white anemone and red tulips.

And this is how lovely the tulips are looking today!
(And I am wearing the same footwear today. Spooky!)

Let Me Brooch The Subject

I cannot believe my luck!
I saw this brooch on the fb page for the fair I went to today, I didn't get there until about an hour before it closed and the first stall I looked at there it was.

metal, 1950's totally fab and about twice the size I thought it would be
New setting, new stalls to me.

It wasn't very busy while I was there, so I guess I missed the rush!

From the same lady, but apparently a decade older, from the 60's. Metal again; I have no idea of what they are or whether they are the same make or whatever, I just think they are beautiful and think they will get lots of wear and are timeless.

There was supposed to be a 'Vintage Tea Party', no idea where and after waiting 10 minutes to get a coffee at this part of the bar, I had had enough and left!

I found it all rather bleak and not particularly friendly; if you were 'one of the gang' it seemed to be one big jolly with many of the stallholders quaffing wine and chatting to one another. All very well if they all buy from one another, but there were a couple of coats that I tried on and put back and some shoes that caught my eye. If the stallholders had had an interest in the fact I was there and actually given me a 'nudge', I may've bought them all, but I really didn't feel the joy, and didn't feel I would regret not buying them.
And I don't!
surely I don't look that offensive to a stallholder?
So, I trundled off on a bus jaunt and ended up at Waitrose and had a toasted t-cake and my freebie coffee; much better idea!

Victoria, (Florence and Mary), recently did a post on what to spend those pesky Boots vouchers on, you know, you buy something and use it and then they give you another one! She'd tried and recommended the Boots No7 Stay Perfect Superlight Foundation and I gave it a go today. This was taken after my afternoon out and I think you can say it did a very good job! My shade is Cool Beige.
Will do a post on my Boots haul this week (oh, yes, there's more!).
Hope you are all having a great weekend!

A New, New Years' Eve Tradition?

Me. Singing.
"Whoa, Jane Goble's on Fire"

What am I on about?
See here.
This one post started me off on a wild 'thing' that whenever, wherever I hear this song, I sing the Jane Goble version. There must be people all over the land who are not bloggers and therefore go " Who the heck is Jane Goble?"
There often is a music countdown on NYE that features Kings of Leon and Mr B manages to take a fuzzy phone photo of me, looking terrible, singing out like a moron!
(This is why I only post small photos!)
JG doesn't blog anymore, (big shame), but does use Twitter (I don't). If anyone knows her, I have a bag with a Chris Martin picture on to send to her if I knew her address!!!????

Have a wonderful 2014 - with all you could wish for. And then some!

Pearl Shots - the firework

This is what we found in our £4.99 bargain box from Aldi. I have written a 'Post for Pearl', but now I've found a firework too!

Me and Mr B had a little party for 2 with homemade potato salad and coleslaw.

Everyones' favourite...cheese and pineapple on sticks!
(Check out my groovy salad servers too!)
Carry on Camping beakers. (That's a pound, Mr Fiddler)
Plus the obligatory mini sausage rolls from Iceland.

Extra fireworks enjoyed via The Saints Rugby Ground! Hurrah!
